R u Jitendra Maharaj, India’s cultural ambassador, is an internationally renowned Kathak Maestro of Varanasi Gharana. His contributions to the Kathak Dance in restoring its pristine glory is immense. His concerts have been described by various critics and connoisseurs in superlative terms such as “Dazzling, enthralling, electrifying, magical, exciting, a burning vesuvius of rhythm with an arresting stage presence, a wizard of rhythmic excellence” and so on. There is music even in the modulated tonal richness of his fluent “PADDHANT” (Dance vocabulary) of rhythmic syllables. Long breathtaking “KAVITS” (lyrical poetry) dizzying ‘CHAKKARS” (Pirouttes) and incredibly complicated “TATKAR” (Foot work) his matchless command over all virtuosity and dynamism combined with sheer masculine grace draw repeated applause. He enjoys sporting with the infinite “Laya” (Rhythm) and “Abhinaya” (Expression/mood) variation. This has won for him the highest acclaim around the globe. He is a consummate dancer, an accomplished percussionist and an exemplary Guru. With a dozen dance productions to his credit, he has set a trend in selecting themes of mythological and non-mythological stories. He is one of the very few privileged dancers to have performed at Badri Nath, Ramehswaram, Chidambaram, Thirupati, Vrindaban, Kanya Kumari and at various ISCON temples all over Europe. His God gifted creativity has lent splendour and glamour to his style. Guruji, the most versatile artist of this century, is the only name to attribute to take Kathak to its peak of glory with an exceptional traditional grace. His institution ‘Sangeetka’ is an ideal example of Guru Shishya Parampara. He is an amalgam of cultures and tantalizing creativity. Guruji has to his credit lots of awards and titles bestowed on him for his outstanding contribution in the promotion of art. |
